ABS partners with Polaris Shipping, HHI and AVIKUS to develop new unmanned bridge concept

ABS, Polaris Shipping, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and HHI’s autonomous navigation subsidiary Avikus,have signed an agreement to jointly develop an autonomous navigation concept enabling unmanned bridge operation, under defined conditions during deep-sea voyages.

Intended for implementation on one of Polaris Shipping’s 325K Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs), the concept is not a fully unmanned operation across the entire voyage. It is a phased autonomous navigation concept under which the bridge is left unmanned only under specific low-risk conditions, such as open-ocean passage. In line with the development of the IMO Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, the concept is widely seen as the most realistic form of autonomous shipping to be deployed in the near term.
