Washington Fishermen’s Convention, Westport, WA
The Washington Fishermen’s Convention aims to unify and celebrate our state’s fishing industry, with something to offer everyone in the community. The Convention will be an up-to five-day learning and networking opportunity for both new and experienced fishermen.
It starts with a two-day, hands-on, U.S. Coast Guard-approved Drill Instructor and Fishermen’s First Aid at Sea training (participants will earn a certificate). Then, a two-day conference filled with networking opportunities and educational sessions as well as community meals. The Convention will be rounded out by a one-day, on-water sea trial for new fishermen to practice their skills and test their seaworthiness (e.g., sea sickness!) on the back deck of a commercial fishing vessel.

Buoyant Beginnings Pre-Apprenticeship Summer Application (due 6/6/25)
Buoyant Beginnings provides you with skills and experience needed for entry-level work in the marine service business. Marine Service Technicians are those who build, maintain, and/or repair commercial or recreational boats up to 150 feet. The Buoyant Beginnings Pre-Apprenticeship, a partnership with Lummi Nation and the Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation, provides specific training to help launch your career in the Marine Service sector.

Skills & Drills Presented by Washington Sea Grant, South Bend, WA
Two-day training opportunity is for people with little or no experience in commercial fishing. The course will introduce a number of skills, including welding for quick fixes, fiber glass repairs, engine trouble shooting, net mending, and knot tying. Participants will also have the opportunity to get out on a boat and learn some navigation skills. The course is meant to give folks some basic familiarity with the types of skills used in commercial fishing and introduce them to this critical sector of the maritime industry.

Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (applications due 3/10/25)
The Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) scholarship pays for up to two years of college tuition, training or other expenses. The Legislature created this scholarship to highlight career and technical education (CTE), and help students achieve their goals. Applications due March 10, 2025.

Maritime Credential Scholarship Program & Application (due 5/16/25)
All on-vessel positions at Washington State Ferries (WSF) require maritime credentials. If you want to work for WSF but need help covering the cost of getting credentials, you can apply for a scholarship. Applications are now being accepted through May 16, 2025, or until funding is exhausted. More than 50 scholarships will be awarded! Apply early for best consideration. Individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
